International Conference in cooperation with the London School of Economics and with the Bundesakademie für Sicherheitspolitik - BAKS (Federal College for Security Studies): German Presidency of the EU: Civil Society and the Human Security Agenda in the Balkans
The conference was held on November 24, 2006 in Berlin before the German EU-presidency and aimed to employ a human security approach as an innovative assessment of the comprehensive political, economic and societal reform in the Western Balkans -- Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Montenegro, Albania, and Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia - on the path to European integration from the perspective of security, development and human rights. It specifically focussed on the civil society and its contribution to enhancing security in the Balkans conceptualised in the human security terms.
A set of contributions to the conference will be published in a special edition of Südosteuropa-Mitteilungen.

Gemeinsam mit der Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung veranstaltete die Südosteuropa-Gesellschaft am 27. Oktober 2006 in Berlin eine
Internationale Konferenz zu den Perspektiven Mazedoniens. Mazedoniens Premierminister Gruevski und die stellvertretende Premierministerin Konevska-Trajkovska nahmen neben anderen erstklassigen Experten als Redner teil.

International Conference on Securing Energy Supply: The Energy Community of Southeast Europe and the EU. In cooperation with the Protestant Academy in Tutzing (20 - 22 October 2006)
Securing energy supply is a first priority issue for Europe. On October 25, 2005, the Energy Community Treaty has been signed in Athens between the EU and South East Europe. This first multilateral treaty between the countries of Southeast Europe is a milestone in developing regional cooperation. What has been achieved so far in the SEE-countries in terms of enhancing a regional electricity market and securing energy supply? Which prospects for a common energy market exist within the region itself? To which extent can Southeast Europe derive as a hub and as an alternative access port for EU-imports of primary energy? The conference addressed political and geo-strategic perspectives as well as economic issues, and discussed netting and interactions of the actors concerned.

45. Internationale Hochschulwoche in Kooperation mit der Akademie für Politische Bildung zum Thema: „Inklusion und Exklusion auf dem Westbalkan". 09. - 13. Oktober 2006” in der Akademie für Politische Bildung, Tutzing.
Im Rahmen der Hochschulwoche 2006 sollte konkret gezeigt werden, wie die Geisteswissenschaften einen wesentlichen Beitrag zum Verständnis der Probleme der Region leisten können. Geschichts-, Sprach- und Literaturwissenschaft, Ethnologie und Ethnographie sowie die Kulturwissenschaften können aufgrund ihrer spezifischen Fragestellungen und Methoden zentrale Einblicke in die gesellschaftliche, ökonomische und politische Dynamik der Region geben. Dies gilt insbesondere bei den eng miteinander verflochtenen Fragen des Umgangs mit ethnischen Minderheiten, der Konstruktion von Identitäten, der gesellschaftlichen Inklusion bzw. Exklusion und der Gewalteskalation, worauf der Schwerpunkt der Hochschulwoche gelegen hat. Die Publikation der Beiträge in der Reihe: Südosteuropa Jahrbuch der Südosteuropa-Gesellschaft ist vorgesehen.

Regional Cooperation Challenges 2007/2008 - From the Stability Pact to the Regional Cooperation Council: Enhancing the Voice of the Region", in Zagreb, 8 - 9 September 2006.
Südosteuropa-Gesellschaft and the Croatian Government invited to the conference as a part of the program of the Croatian Chairmanship-in-Office of the SEECP, together with the Stability Pact for South Eastern Europe. The aim of the conference was to discuss the continued transformation in South East Europe, the future focus of regional cooperation, its practical requirements and its relation to the European integration process.

Die Zeit wird knapp. Im Herbst fällt die Entscheidung über den EU-Beitritt von Bulgarien und Rumänien. Viele Defizite müssen in den Kandidatenländern noch aufgearbeitet werden.

Suedosteuropa-Gesellschaft in cooperation with the Gesellschaft fuer Technische Zusammenarbeit (gtz), Tirana, and the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany, Tirana, organized an international conference on 3 / 4 February 2006 in Tirana, on the topic "Decentralization and Local Self-Government in Albania. Problems, Prospects and Strategies in the Light of Albania's EU Integration". The International Conference had the objective to evaluate the process of decentralization and the establishment of a functioning self-government so far - in the light of the country's efforts to integration into the European Union. Key elements of a functioning local self-government were discussed and projects presented that enhance good governance and institutional development on the regional and local levels in Albania. Representatives of local and regional administrative units, policy makers, planners, and project coordinators, representatives of academia, the business community and the media have been invited to participate in an open discussion.

Erstes Dr. Fritz Exner-Kolloquium für Nachwuchswissenschaftler im Bereich der Südosteuropaforschung (30.3.-01.04.2006) - Exposés
Das Thema Südosteuropa hat für etliche Wissenschaftsdiziplinen derzeit eine besondere Bedeutung. Es mangelt gleichwohl für Nachwuchswissenschaftler an Möglichkeiten, ihre Projekte vorzustellen, zu diskutieren und einen Erfahrungsaustausch zu organisieren. Aus diesem Grund hat die der Südosteuropa-Gesellschaft verbundene „Fritz und Helga Exner-Stiftung“ ein Kolloquium angeboten, bei dem junge Südosteuropa-Experten ihre Qualifikationsarbeiten präsentieren konnten. Das erste Südosteuropa-Kolloquium richtete sich an Nachwuchswissenschaftler der Politikwissenschaft und der Zeitgeschichte. Das Kolloquium stand unter der Leitung der Vizepräsidenten der Südosteuropa-Gesellschaft, Prof. Dr. Heinz-Jürgen Axt, Universität Duisburg-Essen (Politikwissenschaft) und Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Höpken, Universität Leipzig (Zeitgeschichte).
